The Black Pearl is very proud to present and to continue our 7inch-series with this outstanding 2nd release of an Afro Funk Band from West-Germany called APOTHEKE.
Two unbelievable hot Kraut Afro Funk tracks with a light disco touch, that you never expected from Germany / Aachen.
The A-side "Hi Baby Out" was originally released on their ultra rare private 7inch release, but the track "War" was never released before and we were more than lucky to find this forgotten afro funk pearl on the original mastertape.
•• THE STORY of the Funk & Reggae Band APOTHEKE ••
Founded 1978 by members:
Rolf Schmitz, Git. Bass, Keys
Roland Mroncz, Git, Voc
Edgar Bransch, Sax, Keys, Voc
Jojo Wynands, Bass
Jack Mroncz, Perc, Voc
Jürgen Janec Jahnke, Drums
The name of the band came up, as the members of the band and some friends moved into an fomer pharmacy / drug-store / Apotheke and founded a shared-flat situation.
Rolf Schmitz - the mentor - met on a long jurney through the Carribbean lots of reggae musicians. He carried all these experiences the long way back to Stolberg, Germany and as a result one of the first reggae bands of Germany started to exist.
In the summer of 1978 their 1st 7inch-release "hi baby out" / "higher" came out. Following as a logical progression, lots of live gigs were played in Aachen, Lüttich / Liége and Frankfurt.
Over the years the line-up of the band changed several times. In the summer of ´78 the saxophon player Peter Zeh joined the band.
Live gigs were often played with lots of guest-musicians from Africa and that made the black afro sound & spirit even more authentic.
At the End of ´79 Jojo Wynands & Jack Mroncz left the band and the shared pharmacy was dissolving. The left-over members moved to Aachen. There in the studio the band recorded "be tight", "bad vibrations", "war" and "all I wanna do".
In the meantime the band was increased by the ghanaian percussion player & singer Frank Kojo. Apotheke was touring 80/81 through Spain (Barcelona, Tarragona, sittges), Netherlands & Belgium (Liége, Verviers).
Two original members of the band are still active in the Aachener music-scene untill today.
Black Pearl likes to THANK our friend & digging homie Sticky Dojah for finding & discovering this ultra rare piece of plastic.

I have to say that this one is one of the finest compilation I've ever seen. The story, the cover, the pictures, the booklet and of course the music! Just magic, like a time machine. fabmeyer

Why do you love this album? Well, it is the quality of ALL the Analog Africa releases , the astonishing presentation- artwork, AWESOME booklets, the mastering, the music first of all and the feeling you connect with it and the artists involved. Due to not earning enough I changed from vinyl to CDs, but I am glad for the high quality downloads of the vinyl only releases that you are able to burn to disc. Together with a chosen few others AA is a greater than great label. Period. Markus Bader
